Knolton August 7th 1906

Meeting opened and the minutes read and approved with slight alterations

Readers. 1st Mary Magruder, an artide giving various Horticultural directions. In preparing plants for winter keep them well trimmed; do not let geraniums bloom in summer if you want them to bloom in winter. Old geraniums cut back give the most blooms in winter.

2nd Anna Farquhar, Absent. Volunteer Dr. Kirk some remarks on the earthquake in San Francisco and a reference to to an article in "The Century" on "dry farming".

Forethought says it is not too late to sow kale and turnips seeds. Set out plenty of cabbage for winter, and

fight the worms with salt, insect powder, ashes etc. The Rural New Yorker gives directions for blanching celery quickly. by using 10 inch boards set on edge each side of the row of plants - and kept in place by tying the ends of the boards together. Prop over laden peach and pear Trees. Sow pansy seed The assistant Sec. read the list of exhibits; the quality and variety over all that could be wished. The fine display of fruit from Hermon gave encouragement to some of us who have planted fruit trees recently.

Questions 1 A peach tree which has borne four or five crops this year formed the fruit which soon shriveled and fell off what treatment advised? Try cutting back to three feet from the ground; not much hope given for its recovery.

2 Any remedy for blight of rose leaves? None Known.

3 Black berry bushes too thick, should they be thinned out like Raspberry? Yes, any time now cut out all the canes that have borne and thin the young canes

4 What vine good to grow in a box nine inches deep? Barclayana madeira vine morning glories

5 When move a five year old Crimson Rambler? October; make the place rich with manure (old) and bone dust.

6 When plant Lily of the Valley? In October in rich solil partially shaded

7 Will celery plants that show signs of blight commmunicate it the other plants They might do so. Try spraying once a week with Bordeaux mixture

New York market lettuce planted every two weeks is recommended.

John Bentley gave an interesting account of a visit to farm on the Potomac 10 miles below Rockville. Wonderful results came from the use of manure from hen and pigeon houses. Lima beans were early and especially fine and all vegetables even remarkably flourishing.

not be heard across the room, the business was suspended for a while Enough rain fell to prevent our visiting the gardens. At supper the lamps were lighted, but soon the sun shone brilliantly and the sparkling rain drops on the leaves and branches brought forth exclamations of delight at the beautiful scene.

Hermon Sept. 13th 1906

For good reasons this meeting was 10 days later than usual. At the request of our hostess we met an hour earlier than the usual time that the members living at a distance might escape being out in "the shades of night" which fall so fast at this season.

The minutes were read and accepted.

Readers 1st Mary Gilpin read an account of the men sent out by the Agricultural Department to foreign countries to gather date palms and other plants some of which are not growing in Arizona. 2nd Sarah Kirk absent Volunteer Dr Kirk gave an account of experiments made on sick trees by injecting various chemical solutions under the bark with good results.

The Secretary told of an invitation to out Society to send a representative to a Farmers Pic Nic to be held in Baltimore County whereupon
