Letter from Captain John Lott Phillips, of Company B, 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment, to Capt Steele requesting that John A. Steinbeck be released from military service. The letter is dated August 11, 1862 and is from near Chattanooga, Tennessee. The letter includes a response from Colonel William S. Dilworth, also of the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment, denying Steinbeck's request to be discharged from military service.

Sir I enclose the application of John A Steinbeck of my Company to be discharged from the service. He was enlisted on the 1 Oct 1811 at St Augustine Fla to serve twelve months. He is a foreigner by birth, as his oath letter before Austrian Vice Consul at Mobile (also enclosed) will show & I am in doubt how to act in the matter of his Discharge, and respectfully ask it be reference to proper authority for decision.

Brigade Hd. Qrs. Near Chattanooga, Tenn. August 11th 1862

By virtue of law of the Con federate Congress, unnat uralized citizens enlisted in the C.S. service must serve out the time for which they enlisted, when they are to be discharged by the Brigr. Genl. Commandg.

Such are the instructions and information received this day from Hd. Qrs. of the A. of the Mis. [Army of the Mississippi]

The within named sol dier having enlisted for 12 months, commencing on the 1st of last Oct. he cannot be discharged until the period of his enlistment shall have been served out.
