Jerusalem. Then we went to the new English Mission school house.
Then around the brow of the hill which overlooks the valley of
Himon, Mr Jones pointing out many interesting localities.

Aug. 11 This morning with Mr. Jones went out Jaffa gate west of
the city down the valley to the lower pool of Gion south west
of the city. This pool is now dry and used for a threshing
floor. We walked through the valley of Himon, went into
holes, and caves cut out in rocks. We returned to the city
by the cemetery and through Lions gate. Afternoon
went out Jaffa gate through a large turkish burial ground
to the upper pool of Gion. This pool is 318 feet long, 150 wide
and fifty deep. 2d Chronicles 32.30. It is supposed that
water still flows through a secret passage to the Mosque of
Omar, which stands on the site where once stood Solomon’s
temple. We went through a beautiful greek garden
and returned to the city through Jaffa gate.

Aug 12. This morning went out Jaffa gate and went up on
the wall of the city and walked quite a distance. The
entire length being three miles, and wide enough it is said
