In a straight line between Tarsus and Antiochetta
lies Cyprus, one hundred miles off the coast
in the middle of the sea. Here we find Nicosia,
a regal city surrounded by land, as well as Famagusta,
which once was a great commercial port
facing the sea on the east. The island
measures five hundred miles around the coast,
and it is two hundred miles long.

The aforesaid island lies opposite the mainland
to the east, in between Laodicea and Tortosa.
And in the same zone1I.e., on the same latitude line. going west
you see Rhodes and Methone2In Messenia, in Greece.; then Messina3In Sicily.,
Cagliari4In Sardinia., and Majorca; and then following that
Valencia and Porto.5The MSS read "Portogallo" here, which was the contemporary name for the modern city of Porto and does not refer to the modern country. Famagusta
is two hundred miles from Beirut
and five hundred from Alexandria.

From Antiochetta to Rhodes by the west wind,
it is three hundred miles
if you go via the open sea instead of sailing along the coast.
There are two gulfs that it would be better to bypass,
because following the coast around them
would take two hundred miles longer.
In the first gulf are Candeloro6Now Alanya, Turkey. and Satalia7Now Antalya, Turkey.,
and in the other is Macri.8Now Fethiye, Turkey.
