¶ Quinci vengon i caldi si temperati
Quinci i gran sicchi e quinci le gran piove
Quinci i gran friddi e giaci smesurati
Quando in alcun paese e quando altrove
Io dico quando e passa modi usati
Ragionando secondo il tempo e 'l dove
Di tute queste passion si cura
E l'anima si siegue sua natura

¶ L'anima bella nobil e perfecta
Ymago e similança del maistro
Se in queste alte cose se dilecta
Non prendera giamai camin silvestro
E facendo cusi vivera neta
E collocata fia da lato dextro
Chiamata a posseder l'eterna pace
De perche non seguir la via verace

¶ De sopra a tuti i cieli andera volando
Piena d'amor e piena de dilecto
E nel divin spechio contemplando
E hara piena notitia nel conspecto
Di quelle cosse che qua giu mirando
De intenderle pace ch'alcun diffecto
Contenta d'ogni suo sancto desio
Rengratiara eternalmente Idio

Hence comes excessive heat!
Hence great droughts and great rains!
Hence great cold and immeasurable ice!..
at times in one country and at times in another.
I say that when [the weather] surpasses what normally occurs
according to the time and place—
the soul is safe through all of these tribulations
if it follows its nature.

On the Soul

The soul: beautiful, noble, and perfect,
image and likeness of our Master.
If it delights in these lofty things
it will never take the savage path.^{*A phrase from Inferno 2.142 referring to Dante's journey through Hell.}
By doing so [i.e. delighting in lofty things], it will live cleanly
and be placed on [God's] right side,
called to have eternal peace.
Why not follow the true path?^{*Dante again: Inferno 1.13.}

[The soul] will go soaring above all the heavens,
full of love and full of delight.
Contemplating, in the divine mirror
it will have full and insightful knowledge of
those things that it could only understand imperfectly
when it looked upon them here below [on Earth].
Happy in all its holy desire,
it will eternally give thanks to God.
