Rome has the shape of a lion and the great Troy has the shape
of a horse. Ethiopia is situated towards the end of Africa and
is its farthest point. In that country the people are blacker than
black dye or anything else. For it is so hot
in that country that it seems the earth burns with heat.
In Ethiopia there is nothing but desert and earth barren
of fruit. Indeed it is full of serpents, vermin,
and savage beasts. This country has its boundary

Naxos, where Saint Denis was born who was martyred
in France. Across from Great Asia there are as many
as fifty-four islands, but we will not talk about
