shape, which is called the monotheros. It has the body of a
horse, feet of an elephant, head of a deer, a clear, high
voice, and a large tail like female pigs have. It has a
horn in the middle of its forehead that is four feet long, straight and sharp
as a sword and cutting as a razor, so that anything in front of it that it can
reach and touch is torn into pieces. And in truth its character is such
that if by some machination it is caught, it will
feel such great contempt that it will allow itself to die.
But it cannot be captured except by a virgin girl, who seats
herself where it will pass, and who must be well and
finely dressed. When the beast comes to the girl, it will very
simply fall asleep in her lap. And so it is captured
while it is sleeping. And there are other beasts in India,
great and proud, that are an indigo blue color [see note] and have
bright spots on their bodies.
They are so strong and formidable that no one
dare approach them. In that country they are called tigers.
They run so fast that when the hunters
come to this place to capture other beasts
