stre le bien et la mal et savoir discerner lun de
laultre dont ilz endurerent maints grans travaux
pour acquerir le saulvement de leurs ames. Et
an jourdhuy tous ne quierent si non davoir le
nom destre appellez maistres pour acquerir la
loenge du monde qui si tosts leur deffault Certes

Thus the philosophers went through the world
wherever they wanted by means of their
money, and the merchants went with their
wares, or people went on pilgrimage, [grammar problem here] or to seek out
and inquire into other places that they
wanted to know about. For there were many people
who were philosophers and wanted to
experience all things, who went by sea and by land, the better
to investigate the truth of the secret things of heaven and
earth. They did not roast themselves at the great fires
and braziers as is done now by many who wander [truant]
with false devotion [papelart]. There are these latter types
in the world who do not give themselves to any good things
or any virtues except to have the world's praise. And so
they would go searching by sea and land in every place,
to understand good and evil better and to learn how to
distinguish the one from the other, and for this they
endured many great struggles to gain the
salvation of their souls. But these days no one
seeks anything except to have the renown of being called
master, so as to gain the praise
of the world, which so quickly fails them. Certainly
