David Brainerd Spooner (1879-1925), A.B. Classics Philosophy Stanford '99, studied at Tokyo Imperial University and received Lit.D., also studied at Sanskrit College in Benares (now Varanasi) India, and received a PhD from Frederick William University in Berlin in 1906. Spooner was a renowned archaeologist and linguist, living in India for much of his life, and becoming a naturalized British citizen. He married Elizabeth Sweetser Colton (1851-1927), also a famous linguist, in 1912.
