Description

Susan Lincoln (Tolman) Mills (1825-1912) married Cyrus Taggart Mills (1819-1884) in 1848 and joined him in missionary teaching in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the Hawaiian Kingdom. They came to California in 1864 and in 1877 purchased the Young Ladies Seminary in Benicia, renaming it Mills Seminary. It was moved to Oakland in 1871 and became Mills College in 1885 after Cyrus' death. Susan served as principal of Mills College for many years and then became President of the college for 19 years.
