Oakland Cal.

June the 29th 1893.

Mrs. Leland Standford

From the news papers, I read of your great loss. A loss, not less, then your Husband Leland Standford. And also of the removing of the remains of your dear son, to the side of the remains of your husband. This together, must surely, put you in a frame of mind wich is strangly dark to you. You pass through a period of time that is not only strange but also severe to you, and if ever a voice of kind and true instruction and encouragement was in your need and would do you good serves, it would be now. So it seems to me. Not, that I think you are in need of those few words; no, yet they may come good, and if so, my labour is rewarded.

Therefor I take the liberty to say to you: There is light and strength yes life for you, even in this dark and gloomy period.

I point you to the only and all sufficient, and ever near friend and guide: Jesus Christ, the Son
