My dear Mrs Stanford

I know that
you are surrounded
by sympathizing friends,
and perhaps almost
burdened with letters,
all bearing messages of
kindness and condolence,
but which are (I know
by experience) but as empty
sounds, - for "in the
presence of a deep affliction
the soul sits dumb." -

But I wanted so to
write to you, and if my
letter has come, too soon,
you can lay it aside,
and read it when a
lonely time comes.
