My dear Mrs Stanford.

Since the sad news
of your great bereavement came to us
my every thought has been of you
in your utter loneliness. One
comfort you have is the memory
of doing everything in your power
for your dear husbands happiness
comfort and peace.

Last summer when you got on
the cars at Valencia Station and I
sat next to the Governor between
3 & Townsend & Valencia Sts, among
other things he told me of a sermon
he heard when he was a young man,
from the text "A good name is
better than precious ointment and
the day of death better than the
day of ones birth" - he said it
impressed him then and he believes
it fully now. I feel I must
send this little incident to you
