Dear Mrs Stanford

I need not tell you that you have my heartfelt sympathy in your present bereavement. I don't remember, when I read anything in the papers that pained me more, than the announcement of the death of Senator Stanford. I feel that I have lost the best friend I ever had in this country; and the best I can ever expect to have. Why Senator Stanford was so kind to me, I do not know, as he was under no obligations to me. This probably is what makes his death painful to me; so painful in fact, that, I do not wish to express it in writing. I can then well imagine what your sorrow must be. I can indeed realize the heavy cross that has been placed on your shoulders; and how much need you have of sympathy and consolation to enable you to bear it with Christian fortitude and resignation. I only wish I knew of some visible means of lightening it for you. Failing in this, I have only to promise to remember you in my prayers, and in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and to request the Brothers and Sisters of My Schools to join me in this pious work; which, I know they will cheerfully do, as they have been often told by me how generous Senator Stanford was in his donations

to me for these schools. I also promise, which, I know, will be a great consolation to you, that we shall not forget to pray for the repose of the soul of your good husband. It is our faith, as you know, that there is a Purgatory, and also that the souls therein detained are assisted by the prayers, alms and sacrifices of the living, that God, in his Goodness and Mercy, accepts the merits of the prayers & good works of the living in their behalf. Hoping that God will give you those helps necessary for you in your present affliction and that the Mother of Sorrows will intercede with the Divine Son in your behalf.

Hearing of your trouble I thought I would write & let you know I'm very sorry for your trouble. I have a bright little boy seven years old that I named after your husband His name is Leland Sanford [sic] Schenk & he is very proud of it when we told him Mr Sanford [sic] was dead he felt very bad about it. This will bring my letter to a close by sending my best regards.
