Dear Mrs Stanford.

The sad new from your household has just reached me & my first impulse is to write and assure you of our deep & sincere sympathy.

I had come not only to greatly respect and admire Governor Stan - ford but to have a sincere affection for him.

The more I saw of him the more clearly I recognized the nobility of his

nature & the greatness of his purposes. Few men have ever conceived plans as honorable to human nature & fewer still have ever so worthily carried them out; most happily, we who have entered into them can see that the great blessing to our country and the world which he meditated and which is to be at the same time the grandest of monuments to him

to your dear son & to yourself can be carried out as he intended it.

While I sympathize with you most fully in this vast loss, I feel that I ought to congratulate you on having been initiated into such a noble work, upon the fact that it has been so well begun & also that the lines he traced for it are simple & unmistakeable.
