with me. I beg to assure you, Madam, that you never shall regret your great kindness, shown to me, you will soon find it out that you have do deal with an honest and trustworthy young man. You can ask all the references I gave you in my first letter, and you will see I am telling the truth. Please Madam, confer my favor, I shall be thankful to you my whole life and God surely will bless you far. Hoping you kindly will excuse my {botheration ?} and confer my favor, I remain. Very Respectfully your servant, Carl J. Von Lahtz

Chicago, December 29, 1901 Dear Madam: I have received no answer to my letter written to you and you kindly will excuse that I repeat my favor. I know you are so exceedingly kind and so extremely generous, your heart is so great and good to everybody and Christ our Lord and Savior says: Pray, and you shall receive, so I pray to you, dear Madam, I have the great kindness, lend me the $100 I was asking you in my first letter that I can help myself to get on my foot again. Please, dear Madam, lend me kindly the money that I can return the $75, I do

owns hero through sickness, to safe the high interest and that I can take the lessons with the rest of the $25 in telegraphy and typewriting during the evening to get a better paying position. I assure you Madam, yes, I swear it on my honor and conscience by God the Allmighty that I will return the money to you prompt and honest with great thanks. It is impossible for me to help me myself, I only earn $24 per month, have to pay $16 for my room and board, $7.50 for interest, it left me only 50 cents. By this I never in my life will be able to return the principal but if you, dearest Madam, would kindly lend me the money without interest, I will pay to you every month the $7.50 which I have to pay now for interest only and in a short time I will be out of debts. O! hear the great kindness, dear Madam, Help me Help me start a new life in the new year, help me on my feet again, God will bless you. You are rich, God gave you fortunes, O! please help a poor brother in Christ. I have seen better days, was wealthy myself and now, I am so poor and the worst of it, indebted. I has had a very poor and sad Christmas this year. O! Help me kindly with the loan, that I might start the new year with happiness, that I can start a new life. You are so good and generous to everybody. O! please have mercy.
