My dear Mrs Stanford,
Many thanks for your kind letter, which we were delighted to read, and know that you had all arrived safely in Paris, where no doubt, you have been overwhelmed with many duties and pleasures.
We were truly glad to know that the magnificent dog "Kaiser" was taken care of, and went through safely. Doubtless in a short time, he will be devoted to his new, kind mistress.
We had the pleasure of entertaining your

friends, Mr and Mrs Barnes, at dinner, a few evenings ago, and as you predicted, we found them charming. She is really most attractive, and I look forward with pleasure to seeing them tomorrow, when they have promised to again, come to see us in our home. Colonel Grant and I have also, the pleasure of returning the call of Mrs Catherwood and her daughters, who have promised to take tea with us tomorrow. We have had much luck over our mutual friends, Senator and Mrs Stanford, you may be sure, and it

in Vienna) I told them of your having just used the beautiful gift, here, yourself, and of your commands that they should not be put away in a cabinet. I feel that I did not thank you half enough for them, as we are so proud of
