had been made for the speech which I am sure, you and Senator Stanford have scarcely cast a thought upon since jealousy leads to many ugly actions and sayings in this world. It is astonishing how far it will carry poor mortals but with your piety and forgiving spirit, it can do no harm, and falls at your feet - Colonel Grant and I read all those things in the papers with intense interst.

We have had lately sent to us, numerous journals containing accounts of the dinners given in the different cities Colonel Grant feels much touched at this honoring of General Grant's birthday, everywhere at home.

I think of this time you are closing up your house in Washington getting ready to sail for Europe. I hope you and Mrs Grant will meet in New York. We hear she is wonderfully well, [?] every day

some articles have been written and grown, about me, in the papers lately, until now it is said I am a most narrow-minded of Catholics, and am opposed to the broad education of my children, etc. about the latter, I have always been most enthusiastic in believing in the most advanced methods etc as to the religion, I 'll have to get Bishop New-

man to testify that I am a good Protestant and my children Christian by him in the Methodist Church-- As to the Catholics however, I am not so bitter as to imagine they do no good - though I cannot believe in their [?] I think their good works and Charities most praise-worthy. It is astonish ing, what untruths may be told and be lieved, even about those most retiring.
