My Dear Mrs Stanford
When I returned from our charming trip & delightful visit to you in California, I brought home some of your California poppies. I thought I would try & paint them on china for you as a souvenir of our visit. They are but a little gift & does not express my high appre-ciation of you & your kindness. but if you will accept them as a reminder of the dinner we enjoyed & which they adorned I will be much obliged. You see- I could not get the sheen which

nature gives these flowers & which makes them so beautiful. But that is a trick of the Devine [sic], which humanity cannot get. With kind regards to yourself & husband & warm wishes for a pleasant New Year
I am truly
