one dollar per day for general work [---for general work---], but they require that board shall be allowed during the entire month to each one. It is possible that they would be willing to accept $25.00 per month if offered to them by authority.

Under the instructions given me, I had no power to make any offers, and can only transmit the replies, or indicate the wishes of the men themselves.

One individual in the above list has requested me to make special explanation relative to the sum allowed. Mr. Britt, who has been employed on the place for a long time, and has been occupying a house on the estate, desires me to state that when his wages were fixed by Mr. W. H. Smith, then Superintendent of the Ranch, house rent was regarded as part of his wages, and that it has been so regarded since that time. Further, he has paid cash for repairs on the house to the sum of $70.00 and, in view of the proposed changing of rent he asks that this $70.00 be allowed as in part or whole, as payment on such rent.

Some men who have been carried on our rolls up to, or very near to the present time, are now "off", and awaiting payment. Some others desire to go as soon as possible, so that the list presented must, in some small degree, be regarded as subject to amendment, owing to the actions of the men themselves. The precise number of such instances it is impossible to ascertain at the present time, the men being absent

Vina Calif Sept. 4 1893

Mrs. Jane L. Stanford,

Menlo Park, Calif.

Dear Madam:-

In response to your inquiry concerning the amount due each man employed on Vina Ranch to September 1st., 1893, I beg to submit the enclosed statement. This has been carefully checked up from our pay rolls, and will, I believe, be found entirely correct.

Very respectfully,

H. W. McIntyre
