No 102 Bernard St

San Francisco

Mrs Leland Stanford.

Dear Madam.

At the instigation of my
father in law, Mr Edward Pearson, who is favorably known to
Mr L Stanford, having worked in his employ years ago, I have
engrossed and designed a memento of your dear departed son
which you will be pleased to accept with the best wishes of
myself and him. It is nearly all pen work, and I would have
framed it but did not know what frame you might wish. It
is original and there is nothing in San Francisco in pen and ink
like it, nor is there any one here who has done this original work,
but myself. We would therefore thank you to accept it, not for its
value but as a tribute to him departed from those who deeply
feel the sorrow his sad demise has caused you.

Hoping this will reach you, and wishing you good
health and long life

I Remain Your

Humble Servant

R J Preston

P.S. The crests are the only 2
representative families of your
name in British Heraldry,

R.J.P.
