Mrs. Leland Stanford Palo Alto, Cal.

Dear Mrs. Stanford:

Your communication of the 25th instant reached me in due time at Watsonville. I am sorry I could not see you personally, because I greatly desire to meet persons with whom I am acquainted and for whom I entertain sentiments of respect and veneration.

The object of my visit would have been to see you about the Mission San Carlos or Carmels where the mortal remains of dear and venerable Father Junipero Serra are laid to rest.

Since my arrival in California it has been my heart's desire to have the tomb of dear Father Junipero in the midst of his brethern. It would not appear as quite right to have his body removed to Santa Barbara, because history gives San Carlos as the resting place of the great pioneer missionary. Whereas the body of Junipero Serra can not easily be brought to Santa

Barbara, perhaps the Franciscan Fathers from Santa Barbara might be brought to San Carlos Mission. The fathers from Santa Barbara would be willing to go to San Carlos, provided they could secure some one to assist them to secure the Mission and to rebuild the Monastery in the old mission style of architecture. I know of no one except you, dear Mrs. Stanford. You have a great veneration for the saintly Father Junipero, you have a good, generous heart, and you have the means to assist the poor, struggling Franciscan Fathers who are working so hard to perpetuate the work and memory of Junipero Serra.

Oh! do not say no. We intend to erect a noviciate on the spot where Father Junipero breathed his last. Do you not think Father Junipero would be delighted to have a monastery erected on a spot he loved so well, and where his mortal remains are entombed? Yes, God would bless you through the intercession of the saintly Junipero Serra. It will not require so much to accomplish a work so pleasing to God and his saintly friend, and almost necessary to the Franciscans in California. Please, do not blight one of the dearest wishes of

Yours very sincerely Peter Wallischeck

to you in tenderest sympathy - and sincerest appreciation in these trying hours. I pray for you earnestly every night. I desire that you may constantly so realize the nearness of your dear ones who have passed to the higher life, that from their loving support you may draw strength and fortitude for your great responsibility here. I pray God that the intercession of

such as they may avert from our beloved land the threatened doom of anarchy and bloodshed. I sometimes feel that the knell has struck, and I fancy I hear the rustling of the cords that are rushing, to the mast head of our ship of state the red flag of anarchy. What an exciting trip that was of yours from the mountains! I shed tears when reading of it, and how trying these dreadful times are to you, my

San Jose July 10, '94 Dear Mrs. Stanford:

I thank you for your last letter from {Sissins ?} , and I am glad you addressed me as "friend". I am truly and unselfishly your friend dear Madame, as I shall prove should the time ever come to do so. I feel my heart drawn

few can realize.

I sent you my July magazine in which was an editorial about you. I may make my publication a weekly instead of a monthly. In whatever way I can aid you with my pen - or otherwise, be assured, dear Mrs Stanford, it will be a genuine pleasure to me to do so, from the strongest convictions, and the warmest sympathy.

Believe me sincerely and truly your friend, Carrie Stevens Walter

The SANTA CLARA Carrie Stevens Walter, Editor and Proprietor San Jose, Cal. March 2 1896

My dear Mrs. Stanford:

"Praise God from Whom all blessings flow"! My daughter has this moment come home from college (she is in her second year at Stanford) and proclaimed the good news thus: "We have won the suit, Mamma!" You see, every boy and girl at Stanford is in full partnership with you in the case - in feeling at least.

I must confess to indulging in a little private crying over the matter myself, my rejoicing took this form.

Dear Mrs Stanford - every night since the decision has been pending - I have prayed for its rendition in your favor - or rather in form of the whole state of
