I prefer there should be but
1500 or 2000, and never to
exceed that limit, and then
have the best there is to be had
in the way of Professors and
necessary facilities for a
superior education. My
common sense tells me that
if the desire to have a large
number of students is car-
ried out, the Institution will
always be kept poor, and
there will never be an end
of the needs, and with an
income of a million dollars
a year the Institution could
be kept crippled and needing
more than the interest could
afford. I am very anxious
indeed to have Stanford Uni-
versity send out to the world
the best and noblest men
and women that ever went
forth from any university
