we visited the part which
is now being cleared and
where the most beautiful
of all the frescoes yet before
found - bright and beautiful
they found the bodies of fifteen
persons in this one [ ?]
quite considerable findings
and the most beautiful
mosaic fountain with an
exquisite marble figure of
a young boy - we saw
the men carrying out
the ashes and lava in
small basketfull at the
time [drawing of shallow two handled dish] this shape
slow work but no fears
of anything escaping the
eye. Oh how you would
have enjoyed all this
I felt almost transported
into another world - had to
shut my eyes and fancy
to myself if the Pompeii [corner missing]

so long dreamed of was like this - this is so
grand - still so solemn - the streets still
beautifully paved with large square blocks of stone
that plainly show the wear of wheels - and
before many houses in the cut stones are holes
pierced when the houses were laid and the
fountains on each street showed the impression
worn in the stones where the hands were
placed as they were obliged to lean over to get
a drink from the spout of stone - all this
was buried in charred wood one hundred
years before it was discovered again - and way
up the side of [ Vesu?] even now the people are
living fearless and happy - I made arragments to
go again the next day with the same men
