1701 K STREET. Dear Mrs. Sherwood;-

I have been spending a week in New York and on my return found your note dated Feb. 22nd from St. Louis. I hasten to answer and will write immediately to President Jordan and ask him if he can arrange for you to give some of your readings at the young ladies' Hall at Palo Alto, where there are now over one hundred students. I will enclose the card and clippings to him that he may make his own selection of the subject. I wish that I were going to be in California

when you are there. I received the book, The Royal Girls, but have not been able to read it entirely through. I am reserving it for a more convenient season. I have been obliged to lay it down as many times that I felt I was not doing justice to the book, nor justice to myself; but I was delighted with the style.

I shall also enclose a letter of introduction to Dr. Jordan. I am sorry that there is no one at present at Menlo Park to whom I could give you a letter of introduction that would be of any avail. The Flood family who are really the leading family there are in mourning and their doors are closed to all social activities, and I do not know that it would avail much, even if they

were not, as they have not the taste for nor disposition to encourage this style of entertaining. I think Pres. Jordan is the only one that can be of any service to you.

I must prepare you for a disappointment in one respect at Palo Alto. There are no hotels where comforts can be found. You will have to correspond with Dr. Jordan and have him make arrangements in some way for your comfort.

You ask if Mrs. Swift will be in California in March. I think she will as I understood her to say that she would be here about three weeks the last time I saw her which would bring her home the middle of March.

With friendly greetings yours

Jane L Stanford
