President F. Patton.

Dear Sir :-

With pleasure I received and read your kind letter of Feby 5th. When your card was discovered lying on my desk some days after you had [--called--] been here, I was surprised that you had [--so--] honored me [insert: with a call], and regretted exceedingly that by carelessness on the part of the servants it was not brought to my attention on its receipt.

Your kind invitation

[--to-visit--] to visit you and enjoy the pleasure of seeing the grand University under your care, is a great temptation to accept, but I am not able to gratify the wish from the fact that Monday evening I start for California. But I highly appreciate the attention and I much more highly appreciate your kind and tender interest in the work left to my care by loved ones gone from this life, who made me their stewardess, and who are expecting greater things from me than I shall ever be able to carry out. But let me say

to you, though the experience that God in His great goodness is allowing to come into my life, I have learned through the graduates of Stanford University of the greatness of Princeton. Their favorite Colleges are Columbia & Princeton, consequently I have ever been anxious to visit Princeton. I have visited Columbia, giving two days to this work and thoroughly investigating the gymnasium and Library, and had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with President Butler.

Please allow me to extend to you and Mrs. Patton an invitation to visit me and the University under my care

if at any time in the future you make a tour through the garden of America, California. Yours with friendly greeting,

P. S.

I note all you say about dear Mr Nash. during the spring my brother wrote me he was miserable. I immediately wrote Dr J. to send him away, and to my brother to see that he went, and arrange for his going so that he could have comforts. I know he did go; and returned much improved, and Mr Hodges has written and my brother. Both letters received yesterday

[insert: that he] returned for the [illegible] and is much better"-

I will now write Mr. N himself and urge him to go away and stay 'till the term begins again - I am constantly anxious about him I fear he is not shown the consideration he should receive as the only one in all the faculty I have placed there as a favor to myself, and

knowing as I do, there is not one more modest more highly educated and worthy -

I will soon be home and will do all I can to favor him in his present delicate state of health.

I shall always love you and [illegible] for your kindness to him, but he loves [insert: you both] more
