through sudden business failure my friend had
become unable, though perfectly willing, to help.
This leaves me in a critical position, and
makes it necessary for me to leave the Uni-
versity for a time, in order to earn funds.

Part of the debts I mention are
in satisfactory condition; that is to say, the creditors
understand the situation and are willing to make
temporary allowances because of circumstance. But
a part of the amount is not so fortunately placed,
and explanations can not modify the situation.

The reason this troubles me is that
I wish to return again to Leland Stanford University
after I have earned the means, and while I am
earning enough to meet my obliations my honesty
and character will become subject for gossip. I am
not speaking in general terms, for I know just
what two or three persons that I have in mind propose
