and others understand the situation, and are satisfied;
but that would make but little difference if I should
become the subject of discussion.

Dear madam, I am going to do some-
thing that is no doubt highly impudent. I thus
lay my case before and you ask that if you
feel like helping me while in trouble you will do
so. I speak to you only because I know no other
place to turn, and because I wish to come back to
the University with the consciousness that my integrity
has not been made the subject of jest, through
circumstances partially beyond my control. Coming to
you is not businesslike, I know; and I can give
no assurance except my promise and the fact that
Dr. Jordan has been well enough satisfied with my
appearance and references to appoint me to a position.
