Dear Dr. Jordan:

The sad news of Mrs. Stanford's death has just
reached here. Permit me to express my grief at the great
personal loss sustained by yourself and others of the faculty
who have been associated with the university since its found-
ing, and to become, in spirit at least, one of the thousands
of young men and women holding higher place and living life
more fully because Senator and Mrs. Stanford lived, who will
soon pay their final tribute of affection and respect to the
mortal remains of the last surviving founder.
