Mrs. H. E. Wright

Dear Madam: - Your communication dated July 20th just at hand. I read it through with interest, and having met your daughter, and being prepossessed in her favor, inclines my judgement to believe that you would be a fitting person to take charge of the young ladies in Roble Hall, and I have decided to engage you, and would like you to take possession of Roble Hall as such as possible.

Your salary will be Seventy Dollars ($70.00) a month. From this you will be expected to pay Miss Gardiner Fifteen Dollars ($15.00) a month for board aand Five Dollars ($5.00) a month for your room, which leaves Fifty Dollars ($50.00) for yourself.

In regard to the responsibilities allow me to say that the young ladies occupying Roblle Hall, will, one and all, be under your supervision. You are supposed to give them wise counsel in case of their reposing their confidence in you and ask you for counsel.

You will also be required to see that they conduct themselves with propriety and in a lady-like manner. Young gentlemen are never to be allowed to visit the young ladies in their own private rooms under any consideration whatever.

A certain time should be appointed for young men to call and to be received in the public parlor, and under your supervision, appointing a day or evening for such visits. Promiscuous running in of young men at all times and any time is not to be allowed.

Young ladies should be expected, except on very rare occassions, to be in the building not later then 10 o'clock, and when later than that,

should ask permission, and the matron should know of their whereabouts. In fact, rules such as carried out in respectable families by mothers regulating the conduct of their daughters should be enfored in Roble Hall.

Permission for actual gatherings should be liited to a moderate extent, and Roble Hall is not to be used, under any consideration whatever, for private plays, and only entertainments by students themselves without special permission from the Board of Trustees.

These are the conditions that will be required of you upon entering Roble Hall to assume its responsibiliies, and in case of any insubordination or breaking the above rules, you are promptly to report to the Board of Trustees as they now ROble Hall entirely under their control.

Please let me hear from you immediately, and if you could be at the University by the 5th or 6th of August it would be satisfactory.

Yours respectfully (Signed) Jane L. Stanford

Pueblo, Colorado August 4th, 1903.

Mrs. Jane L. Stanford, Stanford University, California. Dear Mrs. Stanford:

Your letter employing me as matron of Roble brought me great happiness, for which I sincerely thank you. I assure you that your instructions shall be carried out to the very best of my ability.

Owing to the distance I must come and because it will take me a few days to settle up my affairs here, I cannot possible reach Stanford by the 6th. I regret it, for I would like to see you before you leave. Nevertheless, I shall come on at once, arriving there by the 10th, I hope, and will at once take charge of the Hall. I will call upon your brother immediately upon my and get from him any further word you may leave me.

Again thanking you, Mrs. Stanford, for your great kindness, trust that I may in everyway satisfactorily fill my place, and wishing you a happy trip and health, with God's blessing for your goodness to one and all, I am,

Yours sincerely,

(Mrs.) H. E. Wright
