May 13, 1889 Hon. Leland Stanford U.S. Senate Dear Sir:

Some time ago I wrote to you about a collection of minerals I thought you might wish to buy for the University in California. My brothers and I do not care to hold the collection any longer and I write this to call the matter again to your attention as I know of no other collection in the country presenting so good an opportunity of getting what a new institution would want to start with and could not otherwise

obtain but with great difficulty if at all. The collection was begun many years ago by my father and my uncle. While the latter was secretary of [legislature?] at St.Petersburg and the collecting was continued while he served [in?] charge at Vienna and during the 14 years he was minister to Penn. Some of the specimens collected during that time are unique and of course could not be replaced or duplicated now. Messrs. [Bennett?] and Dr.[Leidy?] of Philadelphia know the collection well or Prof.[?] of the University of Pennsylvania. Prof.Clarke of the Geological Survey spoke to me of the Collection a few days ago and said he would be glad [?] time to go through the collection and give an opinion on it as a professional mineralogist if desired. If you have no idea of providing a collection just yet or do not want this one please advise me as it will be placed in [process?] of disposition very shortly. If you wish any one examine it and [?] upon it for you every facility will be given to your agent. Yours resp Cecil Clay

May 6, 1889 Senator Leland Stanford Dear Sir Many persons having young friends who are desirous availing themselves of the education to be obtained at the Leland Stanford Jr University wish for information respecting its [curriculum?]. [I have?] been appealed to from many

quarters, any information you choose to give me, I can make available.

San Jose July 21, '89 [Supt.?] Stanford University Sir, Can you inform me when the school will open and if there will be any opportunity for a widow without means and with three boys to raise and educate to [get?]-work of any kind in the college to help herself and boys along. The oldest boy is 14 the [others?] 11 and 9, we are all able to work, I am at present - dressmaking but will do most anything. I wish the oldest boy to learn a trade. Would be pleased to hear from you [shortly?] A.A.[Clarke?]
