San Francisco, Aug 8th, 1889 Hon. Senator Stanford, California U.S.A.

Hon Sir; I learned that you are building the Leland Stanford Jr. University in Southern California for the benefit of the boys and girls of California. That the poor who can not pay their tuition, may work for it, on the extensive farm belonging to the University. Dear Sir I am a poor orphan, and my ambition is to be a doctor. I have strived in every way to raise

the funds necessary to pay my tuition, but without avail. Will you please be kind enough to grant me my tuition? If so I will do everything within my power to advance the welfare of the University. I graduated from the Lincoln Evening School, and received one of the [bridge?] medals. I don't smoke, chew, or drink. I am working for Messrs.H.S.Crocker and Co. at present, to whom I may refer you for further particulars. I sent one application to Washington about three weeks ago. But I learned that you are in California, so I take the liberty to encumber you with another, to be sure you received one of them. Please excuse my boldness in doing so. Hoping you will grant this, my most earnest request. I remain Your humble servant. Edward C. Cordell. 2121 Mason St. City

May 23, 1887 Sir: I am desirous of obtaining for a friend here in Milan, information on the following points regarding the new University: the composition of the teaching body, the mode of appointment of professors, the qualifications required of candidates for professorships, etc, and further to what body are applications to be made? If it is not asking too much, I should be greatly indebted to you for such information.
