Dear Sir - I have not had the pleasure of much personal inter course with you, but what I had, at sundry times, in Company with my brother-in-law Senator Stewart impressed me most favorably in your behalf; not that I suppose you either needed or especially cared for it --

When you had the manhood, and the States manship, to vote for Col Lamar's confirmation as Justice of the Supreme Court, I in common with many of his friends thought, and still think that it was an exhibition

of that form of magnanimity and true greatness of soul, that lifted you far above the herd of politicians, and made you one whom all classes of your fellow citizens, irrespective of any party ties, might truly have and respect --

Dear Sir My wife and Ettie left on the steamer this a.m. was very sorry not to have bid you and Mrs. S goodby, but Miss [illegible] and Rev. were [kind?] enough to bid them goodby on the ship.

Enclosed please find "Trust Deed" duly recorded which is Notice to all - also a Power of Atty from my wife to sell other property, if required, this last is not Recorded & need not be unless you wish to use it. Also Mr. Roberts & self agree that you be the custodian of the lease, (herewith enclosed) under which he has paid $1200 - (6 months in advance) - now in the event that any action, should be necessary, I will try & be on hand to relieve
