Having made of Sanskrit Philology and the Living Oriental Languages, besides German and French, a specialty, it is the desire of the undersigned to secure for him a similar position in your University, and establish him permanently in California. The extreme sensitiveness and modesty of Professor Roehrig, prevents him from offering himself as a Candiate by direct application and his friends take this method of presenting his name, trusting that it will receive the attention it merits. Los Angeles Cal. Nov 5th 1887 Respectfully submitted,

Hon. Leland Stanford Dear Sir We live here in the mountains and have a lovely Home but we are denied the one best privilege on this Earth that of Schools. Our nearest school is the District School of some 5 or 6 to 20 scholars and it is situated six miles from our home. I have been our children's teacher from their babihood days up to last August when I took them all to San Jose California, my eldest (a girl) having then reached the age of nearly 17 years, the next elder (a boy) being over 15 years the next a girl of 12 yrs and two small girls of 5 and 3 yrs [respectfully?]

I placed the elder ones in the University of the Pacific. I now wish to place them in your University, which I think will be in time the grandest school on Earth. My son has shown a love for Machinery and [Motive?] Power, from early childhood and my great desire for him is that at his death he will have left the World the wiser and better for his having lived. I wish his Education always to lead up to the inclination of his mind. My eldest child [has?] a decided talent for Drawing and painting, also for music she plays remarkably well for the amount of time given to that Branch of Art. She [took?] lessons in painting of [Cartio?] of San Jose. I wihs her to enter your University as a student at Christmas if you will be ready for her then at that time. But I wish the boy to enter as soon as possible. Will you please do me the great favor to write and let me know when I can bring him to you. It is my intention to locate near your school for the Term beginning January 1890; but I should like to board my son with your pupils in the building for the 1st term. I wish to put all the children through your school. Please let me know the earliest you will open and please mail me the terms of tuition [etc?] and I will thank you for trouble. Very Respectfully Mrs. Albert E. Ross
