Tues. 5-22-16

Dear Mother, Hope you had a good time up at the [Newley's]. You and the old man ought to do that sort of stuff more often, especially when you come into the great pile of money that's going to be left each quarter that you don't have to plunk out the $500+ for what is viewed with increasing scepticism as my education. After August - the deluge to paraphrase Louis XIV. Deluge of money, that is. But before then, I may need a tutor to pass psych stat, so don't go shopping for gold plated canopeners just yet.

Talked to Kevin last Fri. Wonder what he looks like? We had a longer than usual conversation, mostly trivia. The MacNeill's phone has a long cord, so I was [prodding?] the 4 kids [thro?] dinner and cutting watermelon for dessert at the same time. Mrs. MacNeill views this sort of thing as a sign of brilliance. I shine at giving the twins a bath. Speaking of babysitting, today will be my last Tues. at the Singleton's after 10 months. There is a new Singleton due in about 4 days.

Sat afternoon I dropped in on Uncle Joe and Betty. I had to leave before Betty got home from an est. 1 hr shopping trip. When I left she'd been gone 4. I hope she found her way back. Uncle Josephine is quite a horticulturist. His parkway and backyard are magnificent. He's really got the hang of planting flowers. Roses, irises,

geraniums, bird-of-paradise azaelias, ferns, & a lot of that I couldn't identify. He's even built redwood boxes for some of them. The place looks like a botanical garden. Why don't you & Daddy get together over some rose-bushes again? I know where you can get some free pigeon guano.

An awful thing happened yesterday. I went shopping. I needed some hose, but a dress, sweater, & a couple of t-shirts grabbed me & I had to buy them in order to get out of there. The dress was just a little $8.95 job out of the jr. miss section. It's kind of dressey & the color, sort of an apple green, is terrific. The sweater is a white oiler coat-sweater which I kind of needed to wear over cotton dresses where a cardigan isn't enough & a coat is too much. So much for the extravagence dept.

In the economy dept., I have patched all the holes in my levi's, & barring disintegration, I should be able to get along on 3 pair for a little while longer. Nothing can take their place for being wearable. Don't have time to sew anymore stuff, but am planning on having a ball this summer.

The great grind is really on now. If I live thru this quarter, I may last forever, & if I graduate, it may revolutionize the whole peninsula. The strain may break it off & sink it into the sea like Altantis. I am now running on atomic energy & linear acceleration, you know. Much cheaper than B12 & codene.

Thurs. Mrs. S had her baby, so I went over to a friend’s house & studied instead of sitting. Mrs. S had mentioned the possibility of its coming early, & so it did. She had a lady lined up to come full time as soon as she went to the hosp. Mr. S. called & left the message. I must call & get the scoop.

My Wed. job is the greatest. The house is a simple, uncluttered, extremely comfortable moderm in very good taste & always spotless. The baby is 11 mo., asleep when I get there & most of the time I'm there. Contour diapers are also nice. She always has a do-it yourself lunch laid out for me, & the hi-fi playing softly in the living room. I wish they were all like that.

This week I am having one of those charming little summer colds & a mild case of poison oak. I seem to have lost my immunity. I'll never forget the look on that boy's face when he spotted me leaning against a branch plastered with the stuff. I am ignoring both conditions & they had better oblige by going away. The deadline is 10 days.

I was up at Rudy's last night after I finished studying, for a short before bedtime beer. Liz looks wonderful. She doesn't even use her cane anymore. I have run into Denny Murphy up there on several occasions. Something is going to have to be done about him by me. I think that his being a reprobate is just lovely if that's his

main aim in life, but I would like to slug him sometime for personal reasons. Like the time I walked over to where he was sitting, with a date. He introduced her to me as his wife, me to her as his cousin, then placed a friendly arm around my thighs and began snapping my garters. There were 11 beer bottles on the table (I counted later). I suppose one could achieve a fair degree of favorable notoriety by pouring the contents of some of the full ones down D. Murphy’s back. Please don’t read any malice into this, just a little scientific curiousity regarding reactions. Now do you see how useful a sociology major is?

Love, Marcia
