The news reached the universi
ty at half past eleven on Mon
day and all work was im
mediately suspended. The stu
dents formed in line and
marched almost steadily from
then until one o'clock. They
cheered for every one that they
had ever heard of. During
the afternoon the flag was
run up, cannons boomed
and tin horns contributed to
the general racket. One boy tied
an old kerosene can to his
bicycle and rode between the
campus and Palo Alto.

In the evening everybody
assembled in the "quad" bearing
torches and every thing they
possessed on which a noise could
