HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Sorry about the skimpiness of this card, we're on the road, and mother's day here was in March, and I'm not real organized and… you get the picture, anyway, I'll make it up later. Anyway we're down in the South Western most tip of England, gorgeous country, rolling hills, green grass, gorgeous beaches, great rocky cliffs. I really love it. I guess it ranks with Wales for the most beautiful part of Britain so far, but Scotland is next week so I'll have to reserve the right to change that if need be. There are four of us on this trip, and we're having a lot of fun and the weather has been good which helps a great deal. We're in a Youth Hostel in a castle tonight and it's really beautiful. We watched the sun set over the town of Falmouth from the castle walls and we're off tomorrow for another castle a little farther north, then a side trip into London on the way north and back here for a couple of days for laundry and such and to pick up my travelling companion for Scotland. It will be hectic, but also the bulk of my traveling [to?] end of [?????] [Scotland?] to enjoy myself. Take care - I LOVE YOU - Vickie

Sorry it's been so long Grandma - things have been really hectic lately & when we get back from London we're really exhausted, very little correspondence of any kind has taken place in the last week or so. We've been doing a lot, but there isn't much to tell, mostly shopping and seeing art galleries, and that combination doesn't make for very interesting letters I'm sorry to say. We're both really tired & glad to be moving on (although standing completely still might be nice too) but very sorry to have to be leaving London.. too bad those two have to go together. Oh well, I'll be seeing Denise in a couple of days early [?????] more in body time are the some good friends I miss very much--might even get some sleep on the plane, you never know... There is another edition of the travelogue on its way to give you more details. Take care and I'll see you in 2 weeks. Love, Vickie

Durand correspondence with his brother

Next Saturday evening I am going to a party at the Kappa Alpha Thetas at their house in Palo Alto. I had a nice letter from Eulalie Andrews the other day telling all about [Evanston?] and saying she had heard nothing of the family since we left them. I thought Mother talked of asking her up to to Milwaukee. She is in New York now. [Marling?] of U N was here the other day visiting the Phi Delta. I saw him just a minute.

Give my love to Mother. What did the Renshaws say about my visiting them and the [Running Times?]? I have to begin to make my plans for starting home now. I am going to write to Cousin Frank and ask about visiting them at Deerwood as I go past.

Your loving brother

men on bases in their half without an [?] and then were shut off with out a [?] but such work was to much for our boys and the excitement and the big crowd excited them to much and errors piled up - Berkeley making but one earned run. In the evening I went to Mrs Brownleys reception and had a very pleasant evening. They had quite a novel entertainment. They gave out cards with twenty four questions on them, each one of which had to be answered by a name of a flower. I was with Prof and Mrs Hudson and I had lots of fun as they are very bright indeed and the questions were very good. Prof Hudson was private secretary to Herbert Spencer in England and Mrs Hudson said last night that she used to play Beethovens Symphonies to him nearly every day as he had given them to her. This was before they were married. There were very few there as all were used up from Friday night and the festivities of the day.

has became a regular flirt and so all ends apparently well. The greatest success was the "hop" in the evening. I didn't go but stayed home and worked all day on my thesis and finished the mathematical part in the evening which relieves me very much, as I have been working for six weeks or more on it and it comes out just as I was wishing it might. It is on the distribution of loads in a steel footing for high buildings and I can now show that the present method is theoretically very incorrect. About ten o'clock Hethrington and I went over to see what we could see at the hop. As no one was allowed in the galleries we climed [climbed] up on a shed on a lower part of the gym and tore holes in the curtains and watched the fun for about an hour. It was a very pritty [pretty] party indeed. There were a great many strangers there, & especially many young ladies from the city, which made it much brighter that it would have been otherwise. They danced until after three in the morning I believe. I must go to church now and will finish the account of yesterday when I get home again. It is a cold disagreable day

with a strong wind blowing and the dust is awful. The building was so cold that I didn't stay to chaple but came home after Prof. [Thurbans?] bible class. Tonight I am to play my flute at the YMCA meeting as Mr Harnssen and some others ae to speak. Well to return to yesterday the Berkeley boys arrived here at 10:00 and we started the tournament in immediately. [?] was beaten by [Deuburn?] of U.C. 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, but Ellis won his match 6-4, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 giving us the only match we have won this year. I got mad on Thursday the way things are running in doubles and haven't played since. I made arrangements with Ellis to play doubles with him and on Monday we went out to practice, when [B?] said he wanted to play with Ellis so I gave up and Cochrane, a Fee Gee as is [B?], and I played against them and Cochrane and I won. Tuesday we played the same way again and they won but we were just even in games and sets so Ellis and I tried together and we beat [B?] and Cochrane. Then [B?] got mad because I wanted to play in the doubles as I had a perfect right to it, and there was a row I said if playing wasn't going to decide it I would

have anything to do with it. Some Fee Gees were there an they of course thought [B?] right to play, as he is certainly the best individual player here. I decided that the only way to decide it was to play on Thursday a tournament for all teams wishing to enter. Thursday came and [B?] and the Fee Gees made up their minds that they wanted to have the whole team, so [B?] and Cochrane played together against Ellis and Packard who had never played together before and [B?] & C. on by a score of 8-6 only one set and them claimed they had the contest. I didn't hear of this until later A.M. when I was at the court. I then raised a row and claimed they had no right to it & the executive committee backed me. It finally resulted in our defaulting in doubles but I won my first and Cochrane and I were appointed the team to play. Cochrane acted so rotten about the

that I refused to play with him and so it finished. Rice - the managing editor of the daily paper - asked me to write the matches up so I had a good chance to put things in just as they were about doubles but I don't know what will be published yet as rice is a Fee Gee. I shall resign the presidency of the club next week in account of work. I have the backing of the whole student body as more than a dozen students not directly interested in Tennis came to me yesterday and say that this intracollegiate was something that the whole university was interested in and it was my place as president to put myself into play anyway that Cochrane and I won the [?] team and should not let my putting myself forward make any difference, but I thought it best to do as I did and am perfectly satisfied. The ball game resulted in a victory for Stanford by score of 16 to 12. It was a very loose game as the score shows but lots of fun as there was a great deal of hard hitting and our out fielders did some fine work. In the first inning we piled up six runs every man coming to bat and then Berkeley got there

The Morning Mine - as Tom Watson's brother is the manager, you know through the Allis Co, who were running it in Milwaukee, then up through the lakes by boat to the Canadian Pacific and thence to Uncle Henry's in Minnesota. I think that would be an out-of-sight trip. Tell Uncle Bill Tom Watson, who knows all about the mines of that country, says the morning mine is the best any where around. We arrived home all safely from Mt. Hamilton on Sunday afternoon awfully tired and I am just getting over the effects of it. I didn't stay with Tom any longer, as three of the other [Fer Gees?] came home Sunday evening, so he had company. Every morning this week we have been practising hard for Saturday tournament in Oakland with Berkeley. [B? ] [symbols] - first singles, Ellis - [symbols] - second singles, and Watson & I doubles. We all go up Friday morning and practise in the courts on Friday P.M. I hope to spend Sunday at the Kips and Monday school starts again. I am not playing regularly on the full Team, as Walton the catcher has a sore arm and is playing first base. I am working hard at my thesis now and hope to have it well near done by the end of the week. Give my love to Mother. I hope you will have a very happy birthday and that you had a happy Easter.
