Gold Discoveries, [indecipherable] Free Trade
the Continent has become very
expensive – Vienna is at least
as dear as London – I believe
dearer – We are paying a pound
a day, for five very small, dark poky
Rooms, up 2 pair of Stairs &
with no prospect excepting into
a Coach –

I have never paid less than
2s/ for a Bottle of Wine, usually
more, & have much with none
more than passable – Tho
this is a country of Vineyards,
& Hungary close by still more
so – I do not see, where Gladstone
is to fine the cheap, wholesome
& palatable Wine about which
he discourses so eloquently –
On the other
hand the Viennese Beer is cheap
& excellent – Give my love to
Emily & Elizabeth – & Believe me
Dear Jas Macarthur
Yrs mo truly
