Grouse here, with good success
as respects steadiness of aim,
but I find my power of enduring
fatigue sadly diminished – 2 or 3
hours exercise knocks me up –

We have just rece'd a letter from
Gerard, dated 3rd July. All is quiet
at his Station – Shahapura, & has
has no apprehensions for the
future. He thinks the Bombay
Troops quite worthy of confidence.

The Indian Mutiny occupies
the attention of everybody. The
Murders have filled many a house
with mourning – & still more with
apprehension. The event, altho
wholly unexpected, ought not to
surprize us. The exaction of our
Indian Empire, was almost
miraculous – Its early extinction
would be quite in the natural
order of things – Yet I do not
believe that its end will come
yet. Our expulsion from
India would be most fatal
