Paris, 17th June 1856

My dear James,

The packet contg. your
affecte. letters from Toorac of the 10th March
were forwarded to me here last week and
have afforded me great pleasure & interest
in their perusal. Many thanks to all
for them. I had previously to quitting
London received letters from Isabella
to the 28th Feby. in which she conveyed
the intelligence of poor Kings sudden
decease. His will be a heavy loss to me
for I greatly liked & respected him, but
for his own sake, seeing that his faculties
for the rest of his days would have been
more or less impaired, I cannot regret
the termination of an honorable career.
He was a very deserving but ill used
officer. I rejoice to have such good accounts
of you all, and of your doings. I pray
that you may have continued to [continued on next page]

P.S.
I have been looking all through the Palais Royal and into numerous
other Jewellers shops for the two Bracelets for the young people. But
I prefer the best English work and shall get them at Hancocks
New Bond Street. Tell George Masling with my best remembrances
that I had his Topaz cut here, and set in a handsome
bracelet at Hancocks above mentioned. It was re-cut in
England, the better to conceal some important flaws, and
although these are still apparent upon close inspection the
article is very handsome, total cost £15.16 which
I have received from his agent. I have had no good opportunity
for sending it yet.
