to another brother in law. All the
waiters at these Inns are Germans. The
Vaudois are too proud to go into serevice
and when compelled to seek a subsistence
by other means than the cultivation of
their own land follow commerce and
dealing. Even the wine coopers are
German, and I noted that the cow
herd or dairy man to an establishment
of 22 [indecipherable] cows close to the foot of
Naie & [indecipherable] was from [indecipherable].
Old Montreux is very little changed. They
have built a new bridge on the side of the old
one over the [indecipherable]. The national costume
of the women has disappeared except on the
part of a few ancient dames. You see no
young women now. Do you remember
how they used to [indecipherable] in Montreux?
I have not seen one between 15 & 30!! I
suppose they go abroad into service of some
sort & save money and do not come
back to settle in life until their youth is
past. They [indecipherable] of the old [indecipherble] at Clarens
has been narrowed in to ten yards. The old part
of it has become quite raised up by accumulation
so that you go up hill to the new bridge over it
between flourishing vineyards the property of
the State.

I enclose this as an instance of the changes which are taking place on
the banks of the Lake of Geneva. The Hotel is a large & really comfortable & well
conducted establishment, moderate in its charges. You will recognise the site
as being on the edge of the steep [indecipherable] above Montreux, I should suppose
8 or 900 feet above it. It takes ½ an hour to reach it from below by a
very good carriage road, ¼ of an hour in descending. But by the
old foot path which you may recollect you can go down in 5 or 6 minutes,
rather steep work. The situation is a very delightful one in Summer
cooler than Vevey or Montreux. Between Clarens & Montreux numerous
houses have been built some elegant villas but the majority
boarding houses upon various scales of expense, the whole of which
was quite full, others are being built. There is a second large
building in the course of execution close to the Hotel overleap.
Monnets establishment at Vevey is the most comfortable place
I have ever visited, you have every convenience and the charge
not unreasonable. He is returning having made his fortune.
A brother in law succeeds him, another large establishment
has been created by him at Trieste which he has made over
