But, behold, as soon as that thing became known
no small excitement was caused among the
Blacks. Their indignation & anger was
roused to the utmost and some of them even
went to the nearest C.S.C Magistrate
to complain of me to sanction such a scandalous
affair while they [word crossed out] excused me [indecipherable]
I was not fully aware of this last. But as
regarded the young people themselves it was
unpardonable on their part and their lives
would have been in danger had the Blacks
had the courage to act in defiance of me.
The said Magistrate paid me a friendly
visit to ascertain the merits of the case and
was not a little amused when I explained
matters to them. Whilst I resided at Wellington
all went on well but [words crossed out] a few years
afterwards the young man was killed
by one of the Blacks though not altogether
on account of this marriage.
I might relate similar instances of the
evils arising out of such absurd notions
but this will suffice to show how
