Started at 8 oclk with the bill
in search of the Purser. with the determination
not to return, untill [until] his signature was
put to it. enquired first at the
Melbourne Hotel where he stayed when ashore, but
he was not there. then at both the office
they [underlined]thought[end underlined] he might be on board, but were
not sure - so took a boat and found him
and the head steward. got their signatures
together with the steward's' and returned to
the head office and left the bill with its
duplicate (and triplicate) with Mr. Hill
and got a promise from him that he
would pay us on Saturday morn'g? next" as a
great favor" am't of bill £32.3.7
money received for town washing & sewing for Oct'r.

fine large plumb [plum] cake as a reward
for ther diligence in the laundry

proposed to Ann Scanlon to wash instead of sew, as I
thought she was tired of sewing - she was
astonished that I [sup]should[end sup] think she "was able to wash well, would you be able to iron? "no that I could not
