gined. That summer my Mother and sisters spent with us; & the two
following; until they removed altogther to Greenville. July of this

The 9th of June 1839; my son was born; we named him at my mother's
request; after the son she lost. William Hayne McCall. My Aunt Mrs
Robert Hayne stood as his Godmother at his baptism. Bishop Gadsden bap-
tized him; Mr Pinkney the pastor of the church being sick. Willy as we
call him is now nearly four years old. In my eyes he is a lovely boy;
He has naturally a fair complexion, with a colour. Hazel or what would
be called black eyes; light hair; the ends inclined to curl, a pretty
nose and mouth. He has a good figure; & well grown for his age; he is not
all inclined to corpulency; but rather slender & delicate; at the same time
manly. His disposition considering the general depravity of the human
heart; is good; he is affectionate; gentle; & docile; of course possessing a
will of his own; but easily controled. He is penitent after committing a
fault. His mind can scarcely be judged of yet, he has just commenced
to learn; & makes good progress; he is spelling words of three letters. I
instruct him every day; sometimes two or three times; for a short time only
not to render it fatiguing. I have been carrying him to church for a few
months past; & he behaves quite well. He amuses himself playing in the house
with his books; toys, slate, Hobby horse &c or running about the yard.
Sometimes he goes to see his Grandmother; not often; as one of my sisters
is in a suffering state; & is disturbed by the least noise.

My other child is a little girl; named Anna after her fathers mother;
she was born the 17th of October 1841. She is now nearly 18 months old
I do not think there is much resemblance between her brother & herself
though strangers see a likeness. She is so young; her mind & character cannot
be judged of; & scarcely her personal appearance. It is impossible to tell how she
will look. She is now a pretty, lively; interesting little girl. She looks delicate
but healthy; a fair complexion with a great colour in her cheeks, blue
