eyes & dark eyelashes; twelve very white teeth; a pretty nose & mouth
very little hair on her head; I think it will be dark; & she has quite a
pretty figure. She walked when she was 11 months old; she does not talk
yet. She is very amusing; & understands every thing.

These our only children at present; I hope may be spared to be comforts to us.
I pray God may bless them; that it will please him to take away their
corupt hearts & give them new ones; filled with love towards him & their
fellow creatures. And may we be enabled as parents to do our duty to
them, and bring them up in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

Monday night. March 11th 1844.

A year has nearly lapsed since I wrote in this
book, I have just been reading parts of it, & find it so interesting to myself (of
course it would be so to no one else) that I regret I have not written constant-
ly in it. So many circumstances have occurred that it noted down at the
time would be so interesting now to refer to; that I really feel sorry at
the neglect with which I have treated my Journal; in future I will try
& write a little every convenient opportunity. My husband is away at
Laurens court, my children have gone to bed; & as I am entirely alone, I
will spend this evening in writing. I will in the first instance word some-
thing of the state of our family at present; which consists of my husband
& myself, three children & eleven servants. My husband has been [prosperous]
in his business, & done well; if he had been economical, he might by this
time have amassed a considerable fortune; though not extravagant, we have
spend a good deal in the comfort of life. & for the future now we must be pru-
dent, & put up something for a rainy day. We have great cause to be thank-
ful, & ought to be grateful for our many mercies. Health without perhaps
an exception; is enjoyed by the whole of our family. I have not known
a days sickness hardly in my life, & not since my marriage, except owing to
the births of my children. My husband hardly ever complains. My
