from there went to Harvard College Mass. & entered Sen-
ior class, graduated with an honor; returned home
studied law with his father, was admitted to the bar
& Disunion occurred, he entered the army, served to the
end of the war; & is now his father's partner; he has been
a member of the Legislature, & a member of the Convention
that met, when the war was over; he is middle [sire],
good looking, reserved in manners, perfectly moral,
may be affectionate in heart, but does not show it in
his manner; what his success in life will be is uncertain
for we are now a conquered people. universal suffrage
is the law, the negroes are to have the power, & the
radicals, & Willie is too honorable ever to be found
in that class; for he like his father is the soul of ho-
nor, but he does not pretend to be a Christian, & does
not care for the forms as much as he ought; not going
to church as often as he ought. I hope God will soften
his heart, & save his soul; & that in another world
we may be a united family.

The 3d child was a daughter born 17th Oct 1841 named
Anna; she grew up intelligent & handsome, superior in ev-
ery respect; at the age of 15 or 16, we took her to the North
to Burlington N.Y. & put her at Bishop Doane's school.
that she might have superior advantages to what she
had in Greenville, she took cold it settled on her lungs
& she returned home sick, she lingered a year, & died
Jan 12th 1859, aged 17 . I have written a long account of her
sickness, so will not repeat it here. Her death I thought
a great affliction, but our country is now in so dread-
ful a state, that I feel God was good, to have taken her
