1 [223] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1794 Note- The Diary of Francis Taylor for the year 1793 has been lost- PFT.-
1794, January, Wednesday, 1, Clear moderate weather. I had the toothach last night violently in one of my fore teeth- Swelled & easy this morning. Charles & Joshua, two of *Mrs Walker's negroes, quartered here last night on their way from Castle [Hill]___ Charles undertook to lead B.Taylor's Colt to Caroline- Let him have corn & sent Frank to Main road, wo says the colt let very well. G.C.Taylor & Mr.F.Cosby came here before nooon. Jim who had been to Louisa to try to get some man to hire him, returned & said he cou'd not. his master told him he must stay with me. A Ball is subscribed for at Nooe's this evening. I staid at home. [Dr. Thomas Walker, with whom G.C.Taylor studied medicine, lived at "Castle Hill" in Albemarle Co. The place was afterwards the home of Wm.Cabell Rives, U.S. Min.Plen. to France, 1829-32. U.S.Senator and Author of the "Life and Times of Madison," pub. 1859-69.- WKA.] 2, Moderate & fair- Had the Cow I bought killed- She was a good Beef. Tallow weighed 22 lb. Let Macon Biggers have a fore quarter 76 lb- Hind Quarter weighed 79 lb J.Taylor was here before noon. Said he wanted to Husk corn tonight & my people to assist- they went. 3, Hazy morning, dripped rain several times. I walked out & cut some canes. 4, The weather very moderate. I did not go from home. Had Turneps taken out of the hole they were buried in & dug carrots. 5, [SUNDAY] Fine mild day. I dined at J.Taylor's. Old Mrs Gaines, J.Pendleton & T.Barbour jr, wives and children there- In the evening Reuben Gaines came for Old Mrs.Gaines, who went with him to his wife 6, Hazy and cool- Reuben Taylor called here, I went with him to School house, where most of the subscribers to Coleman were met & concluded on the terms of his wages for teaching &c. Some hands were repairing the Chimney &c. I came home in the evening. 7, Continues hazy & cold. J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr, G.Tyalor, J.Pendleton, H.Pendleton & T.Barbour jr., dined here. John Bowling came & had some business with J.Taylor Two Gartons were here to see J.Taylor about getting shingles &c- I sent Jack & got a Jug cyder of T.Nooe in morning. 8, Cloudy & cool- some drops rain in evening- I went to Reu Taylor's- J.Pendleton & wife, T.Barbour jr & H.Pendleton, J.Taylor jr. Nancy Taylor, James Bell, Mrs Throckmorton- Mr Baily & wife dined there. Jno Langham there after dinner. met G.C.Taylor as we came back, he returned. 9, Rained a little last night, which was ice this morning but soon melted. Cloudy & some rain to day. I staid at home. 10, Warm, cloudy and foggy- but no rain. I rode to John Waugh's- applied for payment of his bond- He promised to pay at next Orange Court. I called at Mrs.James's as I returned- She seemed desirous to have her account paid and mentioned sundry debts due to her which she intended for that purpose- I got home to dinner dry debts due to her which she intended for that purpose- I got home to dinner 11, Cloudy morning and heavy mist, or fine rain. I opened the Bottle Castor oil and took a Dose of it, having been unwell for several days- Examined my Pork & Beef it appears in good order. Had 8 Jowls & 8 Heads hung to smoke- Walked in evening to J.Taylor's & staid till 8 o'clock- J.Pendleton & family, T.Barbour & do H.Pendleton, G.C.Taylor & Mrs Gaines were there- cleared at night, windy & very cold- 12, Clear, cold and windy. I went to J.Taylor's & dined- some there as yesterday except G.C.Taylor. J.Taylor jr went from home this morning. --[SUNDAY]-- 13, Cold and cloudy-wind Southwardly- Some spits of Snow with Sleet & rain. I staid at home. Sent Frank and got about 2 gallons whiskey from Barbour's store Wm.Taylor (of Fredericksburg) came here in evening and staid with me.
