DIARY OF [[FRANCIS TAYLOR]], 1798,
1798,
August,
2, Fair day. [[Old George]] carried a Pot with 8 1/2 lb butter for [[William Stewart]], the Pot belongs to [[Wm. Stewart]]. [[J. Taylor]] came by on his way to the Springs & got a Basket of Peaches for [[Grandison]] to carry there.
3, Foggy morning, Broken clouds,no rain. [[M. Biggers]] & [[M. Biggers' wife|wife]] went to [[Louisa]]. I went to [[C. Taylor]]'s, got him to draw the roots of two of my Jaw teeth, one of them hard to extract. Dined at [[C. Taylor]]'s- [[Sally Taylor|Sally]] & [[Betsy Taylor|Betsy]] at the Springs. Had Apples gathered from 3 Codling trees.
4, Saturday, Foggy, cloudy morning. A good rain in evening. [[J. Betty Bruce]] wanted some business in the office & came here, I took a mem'dm which I sent to [[James Taylor]]- [[J. Taylor]] wrote for a Gammon & Shoulder bacon which I sent, weight 20 lb [[C. Taylor's boy]] got a case bottle filled with whisky, he asked me to Lend for a few days, returned the 7th. [[Charles Smith]] brought me a Sack of Salt, came from [[R. Patton]]'s, on [[D. Triplett]]'s acco't. He intended to take 20 Bushels wheat, but rain hindered. Sowed Colwart Turnep seed in Square by Asparagus and Hanover Turnep seed in Square beyond- a few Cabbage & Radish seed mixed with others in both places.
5, Foggy morning- Clouds & a good rain in evening. [[Reuben Taylor]] came here and I went with him to Sermon at Court house by [[Mr. O'Neil]], congregation small. [[R. Taylor]] & I came by [[Aunt Taylor]]'s to dinner. [[Aunt Thomas]], [[Mrs. Parsons]]-[[C. P. Howard]] & [[C. P. Howard's wife|wife]] there. --[SUNDAY]--
6, Clouds, a few drops rain- fair evening. I took a dose Salts. Sent a Shoulder abt 12 1/2 lb bacon to [[Jas. Daniel]] p/r [[George]], rec'd 2 dollars. [[Roger Bell]] got 3 pcs bacon 35 lb for [[Roger Bell's father|his father]] & paid 34/2. Took out 14th Hogshead Corn. About Getting Yard ready for to Tread out wheat.
7, Tuesday, Fair warm growing weather. [[C. Taylor]] & [[C. Taylor's son Charles|son Charles]] came here- I drew 1(?) Gallons of Whisky out of [[J. Taylor]]'s Cask for [[C. Taylor]], which was directed as agreed between them. Maj'r J. Taylor]] came here from [[Maj'r Moore]]'s, he and family, [[Sally Taylor|Sally]] & [[Betsy Taylor]], left the Springs yesterday- [[Bro'r James]] came up home to-day- we sent and he with the above dined here. [[Macon Biggers]] went with my people & [[Tom]] into the Woods, got Timber for Slabs- The tongue of Cart broke Sent 2 bags Corn & got ground at [[McKinney]]'s mill.
8, Fair day warm evening. [[Reuben Taylor]] & [[Capt R'd Barbour]] called here & staid here for [[J. Taylor jr]] (who was gone to [[J. Taylor jr's father|his father]]'s) about an hour. Treading wheat- Got out a Stack of Early, [[M. Biggers]] thinks 40 Bushels. I went after dinner to Court house-post day- Had Codling & Sweetning apples pared to day.
9, Fair very warm day. Treading wheat-finished the early kind,suppose 80 or 90 bushels.
10, Fair warm morn, broken clouds afternoon. Treading Common Wheat, part of a Stack I was at home.
11, Fair morning- Several good showers of rain, evening. I went to a Barbecue at [[Waugh]]'s ford. There was a numerous company, of every rank and age. The rain (which fell in part before the comp'y broke up) made it disagreeable returning- Let [[G. C. Taylor's Tom]] have 2 1/2 yards German Oznabrigs, [[Tom]] has now made out the 2d month's work.
12, [SUNDAY] Some fog & clouds in morning, but cleared before noon. growing fine weather for corn. no rain. I was not as well as common & staid at home.
13, Cloudy & rained a little last night-some drops rain to day in morn. [[Thomas Jameson]] came here to breakfast. He bought & paid for 63 lb Bacon. I gave [[old Joe]] a quart of whiskey for a peck onions. [[Beck]] was here,wanted wool-gave turnip seed for him to carry [[Wm Bell]]. Had Wheat cleaned & put into Hogsheads in Wheat house which was trod last week. I went in evening to [[Aunt Taylor]]'s. [[Aunt Thomas]] there I brought Brutus home-he had been there a week. [[J. Taylor]], [[J. Pendleton]], [[T. Barbour]] & [[families]] came from Springs.
14, Tuesday, Rained in night, cloudy day, and much rain fell- the Earth well soaked. [[M. Biggers]] went to [[McNeil]]'s shop-sent my center bit to get it altered- I staid at home. Took out 15th Hogshead Corn.
