1798,
August,
15. Cloudy with several light showers of rain. Sent 2 Bags Corn & got ground at McKinney's.
16. Clouds with thunder in west, rain towards mountains a sprinkle here. Patsy Leath
ers brought 4 Ducks & 6 Chickens, and received a Shoulder 8 lbs bacon- The Ducks
at 9d each, chickens at 4d made 5/- I am to have 4 ducks hereafter. I went in
evening to Aunt Taylor's- Mrs Burnley was there. I paid her 3/9 a balance due
for work &c. Came by J. Taylor's & staid about an hour.
17. Some clouds warm. Sent Frank to Mr. Triplett's & got 1 M 10. Nails. Wm Stewart
sent & got a Gammon & Shoulder 20 lb bacon. Had Summer & Winter Turnep seed
sown by Wheat yard. I went to C. Taylor's. Aunt Thomas, J. Taylor & family, T.Bar-
bour & do. J. Pendleton's family. Reu Taylor & do. C.Bell & E.Chew, dined there.
18. Warm morning some clouds,no rain. Macon Biggers' wife got a midling 15 lb bacon on account. Sent me a small quarter of Shoat. I went to J.Taylor's, he & sever-
al others went from his house to Barnett's ford- Tho Barbour & family, J.Pen-
dleton's family. Reu Taylor's do. C.Taylor's do. Aunt Thomas, J.Taylor jr's
wife, dined there. I gave Aunt Thomas 10 dollars. Whilst I was from home,D.
Triplett's waggoner, Charles Smith loaded with 20 Bus old & 21 New Early wheat.
19. Some Clouds & a little rain. smart shower in evening. Stephen Fox sent his boy
to whom I delivered two pieces Bacon,22 lb, he wrote last evening. I walked to
Mrs James's- Mr.Morris preached to a large audience- I came home to dinner.
After dinner went to J.Taylor's- a brisk rain from N.East fell while I was
there- Maj'r Moore, Mrs Bell, Charles & Tho's Bell, J.Pendleton & family, T. Bar-
bour &: do. James Taylor jr & do were there. I came home ab't sunset. [SUNDAY]
20. Cloudy sultry morning. Lent C.Tylor Iron bound Cask to put cyder in. Had Turnep patches resown. I went in evening to J.Taylor's- carried 9 yards Ticklenburg
for E.Chew to make Bed tick for her bed. J.Pendleton, T Barbour & families
there- C.Taylor came to see J.Pendleton jr, who cut his foot two days past.
21. Tuesday, Scattering clouds in morn- day fair. I was taken in the morning with
a violent pain about the region of my bladder &c-Sent for C.Taylor, who bled me
I took sundry medicines but cou'd not get a free passage and continued in much
pain till toward next morning when I got easy,but not so well as usual. C.Tay-
lor dined here. J.Taylor walked over in evening. Trod a Stack of Common Wheat.
4th day.
22. Fair day. Pleasant evening. I slept very little last night-but got much easier
toward morning- my body being more open- I took a dose Salts,was better after.
Treading wheat 5th day. C.Taylor walked here & staid an hour about noon. I
walked after dinner to J.Taylor's- he,J.Pendleton's wife & Nancy Taylor were
gone to Col Madison's- J.Pendleton was there & C.Taylor in evening.
23. Fair and Pleasant. Finished Treading Wheat- 6th day. J.Pendleton & wife &
Nancy Taylor was here about an hour in the evening. J.Taylor jr came by but
did not come into the house, wanted another midling- I cou'd not spare it,
told him I wanted no pay for the one had.
24. Friday, Some clouds in morning- fair pleasant. I walked to Court house to a
Barbecue at the Tavern. The Company was genteel and agreeable- Another was subscribed for- I am to provide a ham or bacon.
25. Fair and very warm. Took out a Hhd Corn,the 16th. Finished Cleaning this year's
Crop Wheat about 220 Bus' or 11 Hhds made. Worked my negroes repairing the
road. I walked by J.Taylor's to C.Taylor's- J.Pendletons & James Taylor jr's
wives, Nancy Taylor, Wm Pollock & two sisters, Stapleton Crutchfield & _____
Ellis, dined there.
26. Fair warm morning-and day remarkablyl hot. I went to Court house. Mr.O'Neil did not meet- Went to Mrs Bell's to dinner- J.Taylor & wife, & Nancy, J.Taylor jr,
Sally,Betsy & Polly Taylor- Misses Pollocks- Nat Anderson, Eliz'a Pendleton
& daughter Caty were there.
27. Warm, hot, a little hazy morn, light shower in evening. Began Sowing Common wheat in North part Corn field. Wm Stewart sent Daniel & got 1 Gam'n, 1 Should-
er & 1 Midling Bacon. 28 lb. Also 6 lb butter in my pot.
