DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1797,

1797,

November,

8, Wednesday, Some Frost-changed to mild weather- Francis Taliaferro jr came here and looked at my Oxen, said he would give me £15. for a pair of them, which I agreed to let him have after I break 2 pair youngsteers if they prove good & no accident- he also wanted to buy a pair of the young ones(when broke) & said he would give £9. but I would not agree to take that or sell before they be tried.
I took Castor oil & got betteer, but still unwell.
In evening walked to Doolins & brought home my new Coat.
James Sebree brought the articles from Mr Triplett's, I bought & left there last week.
I gave him a pint of whisky.
Maj'r John Obannon(who located my military lands, got here about sunset and staid.

9, Very moderate, a few clouds in morning-Sunshine & smoky after- I sent for J. Taylor jun'r, who came over, and witnessed a Receipt from John Obannon for the sum of sixty pounds, which I paid him in full consideration for his locating 5,000 acres of military lands Northwest of the Ohio- He said he wou'd have the balance (333,1/3 acres) Surveyed &c.
J.Taylor said he was busy & wou'd not stay to breakfast.
After breakfast, Maj'r Obannon set out, and said shou'd call on Reuben Taylor-going down to the Country.
C.Taylor walked here-went to look at Sary who complains of being unwell- at night sent her some drops.
C.Taylor & myself went to J.Taylor's to dinner- Aunt Taylor, C.P.Howard & wife, Rob't Taylor & family, Mrs Burnley & family, Edm'd Taylor's wife, C.Bell, E.Chew, & Granny Gaines there.

10, Friday, Coll cloudy morning, a verey little rain- clouds all day.
James Taylor came here early and got weighed 4 Cammons, 35 1/2 lb, & 2 shoulders 30, bacon, 65 1/2 lb., he returned to breakfast.
I rode to Court house- a Court martial of Militia.
Saw Tho's Doolin at T.Bell's & paid him 11/- in rull to his time.
I returned home about 3 o'clock and dined.
Took up best Cabbages & set in trences.

11, Cloudy, dark misty day, rain after dark, not very cold.
Tho's Clark came here to enquire if I had hogs for sale.
I bought old Peter's Cabbages, had them brought in the cart and set in the trenches in Garden.
There was two loads.

12, Heavy rain last night & this morn- Fair pleasant evening.
I went to J.Taylors to dinner- E.Taylor's wife & Granny Gaines there.
After dinner, J.Taylor & E.T's wife set out on their way to Mrs Daingerfields &c. intend to Nooe's tonight.
Sally Burnley is to go in J.T's carriage with E.T's wife. [Sunday]

13, Fair mild day.
Reuben Taylor called here(after dinner) going & returning from the Court house- I was at home all day.
Gave Sary a dose of Castor oil.

14, Rained a little before day- Pleasant-some clouds.
Joe calle here, I sent a jug of honey by him for F.S.Taylor to the care of Mr.J.Blair.
Sent 3/- by Joe to buy Oysters.
Sent 3 Bus' Wheat & a bag of corn & got ground at Dade's Mill Flour 78 lb.
Seconds & Snorts 25 lb. Bran 45 lb. Total 148 lb.

15, Wednesday, Began to snow(Snow 2d) at day, Snowed briskly till noon, but melted almost as fast as it fell- Cloudy(& cold) till dark, then clear.
I was at home

16, Very hard frost- clear and cold.
Removing Corn from Stack to Corn house.
Staid at home.

17, (Snow 3d.) Cold, snowed early & till noon, about 1 1/2 inches deep, cloudy after.
I paid Old Peter 6/- for Cabbages bought the 11th.
Gave shoes to all the Negroes but Davy, who has been making shoes at J.Taylor's this week- Stockings to O.Peter, Moses, Frank, L.Peter, Martin & Jim.
2 Sheep died this week, one on Monday the other to-day.

18, Some Clouds-cool.
43 Hnds & ___Hampers Corn measured- M.Biggers had 2 Hnds.
Jane Gliden sent Frank Day-to whom delivered 1/2 Bar'l Corn, being the balance due to her for Knitting &c.
Wm Stewart sent & got 6 lb Hogs lard.Barbour's
Joe brought me a Bar of Iron, ---lb from Mess'rs Blairs.
Also a Bushel oysters.
I paid him for Carriage & for the honey(which he says he delivered safe) 1/3-
